La Bruja de Texcoco #theauxputmeon
One night, Octavio Mendoza was approached by un bruja in the woods and emerged a new person. From this experience, La Bruja De Texcoco was created, an artist shedding oppressive skin and full of love for a new identity.
Queer identity, and especially queer revolution, are uncomfortable topics at family dinner tables across Mexico. Still, La Bruja centers this conversation and opens the door for others to embrace their identities.
Sprinkling in influences from her Mexico City upbringing and childhood love for music, La Bruja pushes the boundaries of Jarochos and Huapangos, Mexican styles of folk music. Lush string harmonies are incorporated over soft yet overwhelmingly robust choruses. La Bruja is all about maintaining strong bonds with her communities. From her hush and cozy Mexico City upbringings to the town that birthed her identity, Texcoco, the love for community is real and energetic.
Her latest single “Nostalgia” is a testament to building resilience through community, with an accompanying video full of incredible visuals.
