Detaro - Interview Recap
How have you built your social media platform?
I treat social media like a regular conversation. I talk to everybody, whether it's comments, DMs... It lets them know I’m a regular person. [Connect] with communities of people who can relate to what you do… So let’s say you do art, you draw. How many other artists are you following? How many are you interacting with? Y’all can build each other up.
What is the best way to establish connections with other accounts?
Liking a picture? Anybody can do that. But commenting and DMing is much more personal. A good comment or DM is related to whatever the content is. Say something related to the content and they will see it and respond. Let’s say I watch a video on Youtube or IG of a content creator, and it's a skit. I’ll probably write a comment saying one of the jokes, so it shows that I interacted and I watched it. And also, people come to the comments before they watch a video. They are gonna see that and like your comment because they got in a laugh before they watched the video. That’s a good strategy to use when you're interacting with different videos.
What are people getting wrong with social media?
People be on socials, but not social at all…You post a couple selfies and keep it pushing, or you post the same song or video over and over again. It’s like man, they saw it. You gotta go and take different directions and connect with people, because people see through that.
Should artists pay for promotion?
You know how much money McDonald’s makes? They still have commercials. You need to have commercials. I don’t care who you are. It’s all about staying in everyone's face. If you don’t have Facebook ads going, Google ads going, what are you doing? I want y’all to go on Google and learn how to set up a Facebook ad. Learn how to set up a Google ad. Once y’all learn how to do that, and you are putting out these ads and putting out amazing content, you are going to grow… It’s a guarantee.
What can emerging artists learn from artists with large platforms?
Think about everyone that you know that is an artist on social media that has a big platform… Go to their page, and they all have one thing in common: they have a thing. So [ask] what is their thing? And what are they tryna portray? And what are they pushing? They all have a brand like: “This is me, and this is what I’m giving to the people.”
